Carmen Torrano Mellado.

Carmen started her musical journey in Murcia (Spain) studying clarinet and double bass at the Professional Conservatory. She continued with her double bass studies in Rotterdam (Holland). Following this, she graduated with both her Bachelors and Masters at Sibelius Academy in Helsinki (Finland).

Carmen is presently working as the principal double bass player at St. Christopher Chamber Orchestra in Vilnius, Lithuania. Before this she was working in other formations like Georgian National Philharmonic Orchestra, Georgian Sinfonietta as a principal double bass, Turku Philharmonic Orchestra (Finland) or La Lyra Hispana (a small ensemble specialized in period music in Spain).

During the 2020 pandemic and given the impossibility of playing in public, she started searching for different ways of expression, using her knowledge as a musician to combine traditional musical elements (played on double bass) with music software

Echoes from Titans Surface

Location: Writer’s Square

During Huygens descent onto Saturn’s moon Titan, a recording of its surface was produced by converting some of the radar echoes it received into audible sounds. Utilising the intensity of the echoes, scientists speculate about the nature of the surface. Inspired by this and other remarkable journeys, such as, the first crewed lunar landing (1969) and the first explorers crossing oceans for the thirst of discovering new worlds, Carmen has created an imaginary sound-world of Titan.

Discovered in 1655 by the astronomer Huygens, Titan is the only moon known to have such a dense atmosphere. Other than Earth, it is the only known entity in space where clear evidence of stable bodies of surface liquid has been found. The climate (including wind and rain) creates surface features similar to those on Earth and is dominated by seasonal weather patterns as on Earth. Titan's methane cycle is analogous to Earth's water cycle but at a much lower temperature of about -290.5ºF (-179.2ºC).
